Facebook – The New Marketing Frontier
Facebook advertising is an emerging enterprise that is just beginning to develop. For years, Facebook has been strictly social and personal, but as it evolved, small and large businesses alike began to initiate a Facebook presence. Those businesses without a Facebook fan page are sadly behind the times and missing out on free marketing opportunities.
In light of Facebook’s recent IPO, they are now revamping and refining their advertising offerings to drive revenues to satisfy their new stockholders. Where before, Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook’s founder) had actively protected user data from advertisers, we can now anticipate that Facebook will begin to actively monetize their reams of information about user preferences and demographics to generate the ad revenue stockholders will demand.
The frontier of Facebook is wide open, but clickable ads – at least those attempting to score a direct sale – may not worth your time or money. Content, though, will be king – engaging content that draws in fans and foes alike and encourages interaction between your business and their social lives. Facebook is by definition a social medium and you therefore cannot expect to transact with users without first being able to interact.
What the most successful Facebook marketers are discovering is that advertising on Facebook does not require ads and that when ads are used, they must lead to an interaction rather than a transaction.
